What should I consider when I buy a digital radio?
You should check, if the digital radio supports the DAB+ standard. This new standard is backward compatible with DAB and so you can receive all the programs.
What can I do if my DAB radio does not work?
First of all you can try to optimize your antenna and to switch on the radio in different places (to compensate any reception changes). If this should not solve the problem try to interrupt your connections and to search again all programs. On some devices, before searching programs, it is necessary to reset them or to return to the factory settings. Here there are the different procedures:
- Scan button, press and hold Seek or Tune for at least three seconds untill the compleate program search starts (on the display you see “Scanning” or “Auto Scan”).
- Scan button, press and hold Seek or Tune for at least three seconds and interrupt the reception at the same time (unplug and reconnect your antenna). The search starts(on the display you see “Scanning” or “Auto Scan”).
- Select “Show trim list” with the rotary knob (Tune / Select). Then start the automatic search (select Scanning or Auto Scan).
- Press and hold “Autotune” or “Auto Scan” and On/Off at the same time untill you see the submenu. Select “Reset System” and wait untill the automatic search is compleated (on the display you see “Scanning” or “Auto Scan”).
- Press Setup and then Reset System. The automatic search starts (on the display you see “Scanning” or “Auto Scan”).
- Press Menu, select System Reset and confirm with Select oder Enter. The automatic search starts (on the display you see “Scanning” or “Auto Scan”).
- Press and hold Options untill you see Factory Reset on your screen. Confirm with Yes. The automatic search starts (on the display you see “Scanning” or “Auto Scan”).
- Open the menu pressing the Info button, then select Factory Reset using the buttons Up/Down. You will see “Confirm Reset”, press Select. The automatic search starts (on the display you see “Scanning” or “Auto Scan”).
- After the program search, the associated programming keys have to be rearranged. In general, select the specific program and press and hold the corresponding memory key (normally you see “Preset Stored” on the display).
Which DAB/DAB+ programs can I receive in south Tyrol?
You can see the programs you receive in each zone of South Tyrol at https://www.ras.bz.it/en/radio-3/. Because we are expanding out network, it is better to do a program search in order to receive all radio programs.
What does DAB mean?
DAB stands for “Digital Audio Broadcasting”. It is the new radio standard, that is going to supersede the analog one, that has been used for over 90 years. Also DMB (Digital Mobile Broadcasting) is a part of the DAB family. It allows the DAB technology to be used on mobile devices to transfer video signals and multimedia contents. DMB is used almost exclusively in Korea.
What does DAB+ mean?
DAB+ is an evolution of the DAB standard. It uses a more efficient audio compression (of about 30-50%) and a better error correction (probably one of the best at the moment). Compared to DAB, DAB+ signals are less susceptible and have a bigger geographic reach, with the same or a better audio quality.
Which radio do I need for DAB/DAB+?
You need a new digital DAB+ radio that supports even DAB, FM broadcasting and other radio transmission standards (preferably a multi-standard receiver).
Is my DAB radio upgradeable to DAB +?
Except as expressly provided by the manufacturer (through software update, activation code or additional module), this is not possible. On the other side DAB+ is always backward compatible with DAB.
Which frequency ranges do DAB/DAB+ use?
In Europe the frequencies are from 174,928 MHz to 239,200 MHz, correspondingly the blocks from 5A to 13F in the VHF-Band (Band III) and from 1452,960 MHz bis 1466,656 MHz, correspondingly the blocks from LA to LI (L-Band).
Can I receive all the existing FM programs with DAB/DAB+?
It is possible to receive the programs either through DAB/DAB+ (provided that the radio stations transmit in digital standard) or through FM broadcasting (analog standard). This is possible because the radio receivers normally are multi-standard receivers.
Can I receive „Dolby Surround“ through DAB/DAB+?
Yes, with DAB+ it is possible, provided that the program tansmits Dolby Sorround data.
Can I receive DAB/DAB+ signals in my car?
Yes. You can do this wherever a DAB signal is present and if your car owns a DAB/DAB+ compatible receiver (including the specific antenna).
Does my car radio automatically switch to FM if there is no DAB/DAB+ signal?
Yes, provided that the program is available on an alternative frequency. In this case the car radio automatically switches to another DAB-Block or to FM broadcasting. When it switches you will probably hear a time delay or an overlap of the signal. On some devices you have to activate the switching (Follow-Function) manually.
Can I receive DAB/DAB+ programs even through my home antenna?
Yes, provided that your antenna is suitable and if it covers and reinforces the necessary frequency range.
Which datarate do the DAB/DAB+ proigrams of RAS have?
Our DAB-Programs have a datarate from 64 to 192 kbit/s for DAB programs and of 64 kbit/s for DAB+ programs. The datarate depends on the program content that is transmitted.
Can I receive the DAB/DAB+ programs of RAS for free and everywhere?

Which audio encodings do DAB/DAB+ use?
DAB uses the MPEG 1 Layer 2 with a linear CRC Block encorder and (2 bit coefficients for polynomial). DAB+ uses MPEG 2 HE AAC v2 with linear Reed Solomon-Block encoder (2 bit coefficients for polynomial).
Can I also hear webradios with a DAB/DAB+ device?
There are lots of multi-standard radio receivers, that can receive webradios. To use them it is better to have a stable internet connection (LAN, WLAN, SIM-Card with data-flatrate or hotspot).
Can I record with my DAB/DAB+ device?
Yes, there are several devices that can record, play, fast forward and rewind the program. These devices record on a USB stick or a integrated hard disk.
Is the audio quality of DAB/DAB+ better than those of analog radio?
The digital radio programs have a much better sound than analog ones, specially with DAB+ programs and in mobile reception. The main reasons are an excellent audio codec (MPEG 4 HE AAC v2), the absence of analog interferences (e.g. noise, superimpositions, intermodulation interferences), and the extended frequency band to 20 kHz (instead of 15 kHz of FM transmissions).
Are there quality differences among DAB/DAB+ receivers?
Yes, there are several differences in input sensitivity and program stability.
Is the electrosmog increased by the DAB/DAB+ technology?
No, because the DAB/DAB+ technology need low transmission power to have an optimal reception.
What is a DAB multiplex?
Different radio programs are transmitted in a multiplex, called “Block” or “Ensemble”, just like it happens in DVB-T. For DAB programs a block contains 8 programs, a DAB+ block contains between 12 and 16 programs, including additional information. A multiplex uses a frequency band of 1,54 MHz,while a FM program uses 0,3 MHz.
When will the analog radio be switched off?
At the moment there are no concrete plans. This will probably happen in 10 Years.
