Electromagnetic compatibility concerning the environment (EMVU)

The broadcasting-company RAS is conscious how serious the matter of the electromagnetic compatibility concerning the environment is. Fear of imperceptible and invisible effects of rays on people, better known as "electro smog", grows and grows. Different discomforts and illnesses are often attributed to the electromagnetic fields through the power-supply or the radio waves. In this sense living rooms with free-voltage switching become more and more modern (bio installation). There is no doubt that electromagnetic fields exercise an influence on human body.

Ray-treatment in different frequency-range for different disabilities or x-rays can help, but also harm. Several studies have researched as far as the power of such fields is dangerous or harmless. In spite of intensive research it has not been possible to define a clear line. Specialized literature mentions a multitude of results of which you can draw contradicting conclusions. It is due to this contradictory fact, that it is so difficult to judge how far electromagnetic rays are noxious. Also the influence of different factors of our environment, as for example air-pollution and stress, could not be excluded and delimitated in long-term studies. Science couldn’t so give a sure answer to the question about the relation between the "electro smog" and the human health. It would be important to know, that above a certain threshold physical disturbs appear with calculable certainty and below it not. People should only act according to this factors to take advantages of the wireless communication without discomforts.

An area which is very much associated with this theme is the one of the psychology. In cases where the psychological component prevails, an objective consideration of the given problem is impossible. Suddenly the bare presence of a transmitting-tower in the vicinity causes discomfort, making no difference if it transmits or not. In some cases this discomfort can aggravate to a sickness.

In the above picture, where the frequency spectrum can be seen, the frequency ranges in which the RAS operates his transmitters are pointed out in green. For them are valid the limits mentioned below, as they are prescribed by the italian decree NR. 318 of 10.09.1998.
In several transmitters and their supplying area measurements have been made to collect the electric field -strength (some examples are published below). Due to the little transmitting power this fall down on values under the admitted field- strength permitted by law already within the enclosure of the transmitter. In the supplied places the field-strength are only fractions of them. Because it is necessary to have a direct view of the transmitting station to have an unobjectionable reception, our transmitting-net is built up capillary. In contrast to plain areas where strong-powered transmitters provide a great region, this is not possible in our region because of the geographic structure, where soon a mountain or a hill obstruct the view of the transmitter. In this sense our net is based on several transmitting –stations with little power. Consequently the field-strength in the immediate vicinity is less. Television transmitters for great supplying areas in plain regions transmit with a 20.000 Watt power . You can compare: the most powerful transmitter of the RAS on the "Penegal" which is situated at 1700 m above sea level on the Mendel (far away of any inhabited area), transmits with a power of 1500 Watt. It provides so whole Bozen, the "Unterland" of South-Tyrol , great parts of the "Schlern" region, the "Ritten" and the "Tschöggelberg" and many other areas.
To avoid an uncontrolled growing of the transmitting-towers the region South-Tyrol tries to include any kind of radio service in the infrastructures of the RAS. In future together with the RAI also other television-, radio- and GSM network provider and radio-services could be included in the services of the RAS.

As our transmitting stations are not situated in the localities but out of them, it is guaranteed that also the field-strength of other radio-services in the regarding village or city are under the limiting value.
